Russian / Русский

At a glance

Three Snooze-related terms in Due are being revisited in Russian. The proposals aim to make the three terms read as clearly distinct from each other, and from Reminder / Repeat (which are already used elsewhere in the app).

English Currently Proposed
Auto Snooze Авт. Повтор (“Auto Repeat”) Настойчивые уведомления
Snooze Повтор / Отложить (Settings) · Позже (notif button) Отсрочка (alt: Позже)
Notification Snooze Отложить уведомление unchanged

Skim the proposals, then jump to What I’d like to know for the questions — or read on for full context.

Due is a reminder/timer app that nudges you when a task is due. If you don’t react, Due can keep nudging every few minutes — that’s a feature called Auto Snooze.

Auto Snooze is separate from Repeat (the recurrence schedule, e.g. every Monday at 9 AM). A reminder can have both: “Pay school fees on the last day of every month” with Auto Snooze of 5 minutes. This means the reminder will fire monthly (Repeat), and if you don’t act, Due keeps nudging every 5 minutes (Auto Snooze) until you mark it done.

Due has existing translations for these terms for many years. However I’d like to revisit them to improve on their clarity.

In English, ‘Snooze’ is well understood in the context of an alarm clock where you temporarily stop the alarm and it’ll sound again about 10 minutes later. However, in many other languages, ‘Snooze’ can just mean a nap.

Due also uses the word ‘Snooze’ in three different contexts — Auto Snooze, Snooze, and Notification Snooze. They do different things, so we need three distinct Russian words to distinguish them clearly.

Side-by-side

All three Snooze terms are being revisited in Russian. The old Auto Snooze (Авт. Повтор) literally meant “Auto Repeat” — the same word as the recurrence schedule, which collided with Repeat. The Snooze noun also previously used Повтор, deepening the collision.

English in Due Existing Translation Proposed New Translation What it does
Auto Snooze Авт. Повтор (“Auto Repeat”) Настойчивые уведомления The app keeps reminding you every few minutes until you respond
Snooze Повтор / Отложить (Settings) · Позже (notification button) Отсрочка (alt: Позже) The Snooze button in notifications, the Snooze Duration label in Settings → Prominent Alerts, and the editor toolbar’s ‘Snooze: 5 min’ subtitle
Notification Snooze Отложить уведомление Отложить уведомление (unchanged) A Settings page where users configure which snooze durations are offered when snoozing a reminder from a notification

Настойчивые уведомления = persistent notifications — encodes “the app keeps doing it”. Отсрочка = postponement.

Other Russian terms already used in Due (for reference)

These words are already used by the app to refer to various features. They must not be reused for the translations of Auto Snooze, Snooze, or Notification Snooze. I am not planning on changing these terms. They are listed for your reference.

English in Due Russian in Due What it refers to
Reminder Задача / Задачи The to-do items the user creates. Note that Due uses Задача (“Task”), not Apple’s Напоминание
Repeat Повтор Recurrence schedule (e.g. every Monday at 9 AM) — the old Auto Snooze and old Snooze noun both used Повтор, which is the collision we’re fixing

Note on Apple’s term for Snooze. Apple’s iOS Russian is itself inconsistent: Calendar and Reminders use the verb Отложить, the Clock intent uses Позже, and Sleep Health UI uses the noun Длительность повторения. Because there’s no single Apple-aligned term to follow, I chose Отсрочка — a clear postponement noun that avoids both the Повтор collision (Repeat) and the Отложить verb form (which is already in use for Notification Snooze). Open to challenge if you feel a different word would read more naturally.

Where each appears in the app

  • Auto Snooze Auto Snooze — long-press menu, editor toolbar, Settings page

  • Snooze Snooze action button. In this case, remind me again 60 mins later.

  • Notification Snooze Notification Snooze settings page

What I’d like to know

# Decision
1 Auto Snooze: stick with Авт. Повтор or move to Настойчивые уведомления?
2 Snooze: pick one word for all three places — Отсрочка or Позже?
3 Notification Snooze stays as Отложить уведомление. Does it still work?
4 Suggest anything else?

Details on each below.

  1. Auto Snooze — is the proposed Настойчивые уведомления (“persistent notifications”) better, worse, or about the same as the existing Авт. Повтор (“Auto Repeat”)? (We’re moving off Повтор because it’s the same word as Repeat / recurrence — see the note in the reference table.)
  2. Snooze button — today the Settings uses Повтор / Отложить while the notification button uses Позже. We’d like to use the same word in all three places (notification button, Settings → Snooze Duration, editor’s ‘Snooze: 5 min’ subtitle). Would you pick Отсрочка (postponement noun) or Позже (the existing notification-button term), and why?
  3. Notification Snooze stays as Отложить уведомление — does this still work, or would something else read better?
  4. If none of the proposed terms work, what would you suggest instead? The translated term doesn’t need to literally mean ‘auto’ or ‘snooze’ — for example, the Chinese translation just means ‘Keep reminding’. Just don’t reuse Задача or Повтор — those are used for other things in the app.

Final check — try translating this in Russian

Here’s a quick self-check that’s really useful: try translating the three steps below into Russian using the proposed terms. The 5 terms (Reminder, Repeat, Auto Snooze, Snooze, Notification Snooze) should all read as clearly distinct, with no ambiguity between them. If the translation reads cleanly, the proposals are working. If you find yourself reaching for a different word to keep things clear, that’s a useful signal — please share what you reached for instead.

  1. Create a Reminder for 9 AM. Tap Repeat and choose Daily — Due reminds you at 9 AM every day.
  2. Turn on Auto Snooze at Every 5 Minutes — Due keeps alerting until you complete the reminder.
  3. When the reminder fires, you can also Snooze it from the notification (using the Notification Snooze durations from Settings).
